Preparation

The best way to prepare for an assessment is to relax the night before your appointment, get a good night’s sleep, and eat a balanced breakfast in the morning. Bring snacks and something to drink during your breaks. There is no way to study for a neuropsychological examination. Dress comfortably and be sure to bring glasses, hearing aids, or any other assistive devices needed. If the patient takes regular medication (e.g., stimulant medication) please check with the neuropsychologist to discuss dosage scheduling before the appointment.

Adults

Assessments take place during work hours (i.e., 9 am – 5 pm). A full assessment typically takes 5 to 6 hours. A screening assessment typically takes 2 to 3 hours. During a full assessment, there is a lunch break. If your appointment is during the week, it is ideal to take the day off work. Although most people find the assessment process interesting and/or enjoyable; they also report feeling tired afterward.

Children

Assessments take place during school hours (i.e., 9 am – 3 pm). A full assessment typically takes 5 to 6 hours and includes a lunch break. Sometimes younger children need more breaks and have their assessment split into two days (no additional charge). It is best to take the day off of school. Staff can provide you with an excused absence letter. Although most children and teens find fun during the assessment process; they often report feeling tired afterward.

What you tell your child about a neuropsychological assessment depends on their age and the presenting problem. Keep explanations brief and related to problems they are experiencing. For example, "the doctor will help you with your reading difficulties" or "the doctor can help you feel less nervous about taking tests." There are no invasive or painful procedures involved in neuropsychological assessment. Many assessments are given interactively with the use of iPads or computers. Other tests are paper and pencil tasks.
